Dr. Sierra Washington is currently an Associate Clinical Professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine, in the Department of Reproductive Medicine. In addition Dr. Washington works as an abortion provider at Planned Parenthood and is the immediate past Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, which provides medical services for 17 locations across three counties in southern California. As medical director and chief medical officer, Dr. Washington provided clinical oversight and direction, led new clinical initiatives, and oversaw the organization’s quality and research programs.
A graduate of Harvard Medical School she also holds a Masters of Science in Public Health from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Washington completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the UCSF, is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG).
She has experience working at the intersection of HIV and reproductive health in several countries including the USA, Zambia, Cameroon, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania. She has also worked as an abortion provider in many places with varying levels of access to safe and legal abortion including Kenya, Rwanda, New York, Indiana, and California.
Her past positions include Director of International Programs for the department of OBGYN at Indiana University School of Medicine and Co-Field Director for Reproductive Health AMPATH-USAID Kenya. She has held visiting faculty appointments in OBGYN and taught family planning and post abortion care at the Moi University, Kenya; The National University of Rwanda; and Muhimbili National University, Tanzania. Dr. Washington has published numerous articles. She has spoken regionally, nationally and internationally on a range of topics including: How to set up and maintain global academic collaborations in OBGYN, prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV in the U.S. and abroad, as well as global access to contraception and abortion.
